INTRODUCTION: The Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Guwahati is an Central autonomous body under Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India and working in this field for last 32 years (which was started as Food Craft Institute in 1985).

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE (IN BRIEF): The Main objective of setting up of this institute is to impart training to promising young men & women in Hotel Management, general Food Management and Catering Technology and to provide middle level technical and managerial human resource to Hotels and Hospitality Industries of National and International repute, and other allied Catering industries like Railways, Airlines, Ships, Industrial and Office canteens as well as to equip the trainees with adequate practical knowledge of the trade, so as to able them to start their own business according to their capacity and capability in the field of small bakery, fast food counter, small restaurants, out-door catering organization, mobile catering etc. as there is a lack of skilled manpower in hotels and other allied industries in this region. In this way the Institute plays an important role in providing trained manpower to the Industry, and helps to provide job opportunity to the trainees of the entire country as a whole and N.E. Region in particular. This Institute is also playing a role in transferring related technology to this Industry of N.E. region even by way of providing consultancy services.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

A] DEGREE COURSE:

Admission to the 1st year of 3 year B.Sc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration is granted on the basis of Joint Entrance Examination followed by Central online Counselling conducted by National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Noida. The advertisement inviting application generally published in the month of December/ January in every year in Employment News and in many leading News papers all over India.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA & RESERVATION OF SEATS:

The eligibility criteria for the course is to pass 10+2 system or equivalent examination in any academic stream with English as a compulsory subject. Those appearing in 10+2 final or equivalent examination can also appear in JEE for being considered for provisional basis and have to pass the qualifying examination. Upper age limit is 22 year for GEN/OBC candidates and 25 years for ST/SC category candidates. 15% and 7.5% seats reserved for SC/ST categories respectively and 3% are reserved for physically handicapped candidates. From the year 2008 the Central Govt. has also taken policy to reserve seats for OBC candidates.

RESERVATION FOR N.E. STATES:

Total 54 seats are reserved for all North East States i.e. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura. These seats are advertised by the Directorate of Tourism of every state in April / May inviting applications. The name of selected candidates are then forwarded to IHM, Guwahati for admission through NEC.

SHORT COURSE ADMISSION PROCEDURE:

For all courses other then three year degree in Hospitality & Hotel Administration applications for admission in the prescribed form should be addressed to the Principal. Admission notice for inviting applications is published in all leading News Paper of Assam in the month of May / June. Seats are reserved for sponsored candidates as per rule. Some seats are reserved for sponsored candidates of N.E. states other than Assam. Some seats are open for All India candidates also. Candidates have to appear for the interview as per the interview date mentioned in the advertisement notice.

PLACEMENT:

100% placement is confirmed always by the Institute in the level of Management Trainee, Executive Trainee, Hotel Operation Trainee, Retailing, Airline, Shipping, etc. with an average stipend salary of Rs.25000/-.

FCI was established in the year 2010.

FCI conducts 1 1/2 year diploma course in the following disciplines:

  • 1) Food Production - Rs 40,800/
  • 2) Food and Beverage service- Rs36,000/
  • 3) Front Office- Rs 36,000/
  • 4) Bakery & Confectionery-Rs 40,800/
  • 5) Housekeeping-Rs 36,000/

There is Hostel accommodation @ Rs 2000/ per month

The course is affiliated to National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology,under MOT,GOI. It includes 6 months mandatory industrial training in the hotel industry.

The course usually commences in the third week of July each year.

The eligibility criteria of candidates is:

1) 12th pass in any stream

2) Maximum age is 22 years for General and OBC and 25 years for SC/ST.

The candidates are interviewed before admissions. Upon successful completion of the course and training they are placed at jobs in similar hotels.
